Sea to Sky corridor delivers the magic of ocean & mountains…

December 1, 2009

The Sea to Sky corridor brings you from the lights and hum of Vancouver, to Whistler Village’s alpine flair, in just under two hours.   It’s a stellar driving experience!

The new highway hugs the dramatic coastline of Howe Sound, dotted with Gulf Islands, ringed with majestic mountains (make sure you stop at the viewpoint, and gaze at the spectacular Tantalus Range — your heart will soar!), and with the waters of the Salish Sea (the original name for Georgia Strait) stretching to the distant blue line of Vancouver Island.

This Strait is considered by many mariners to offer the best protected boating waters in the world.

Squamish evolves out of Howe Sound, with marinas and fiords giving way to the beginning of the climb into the coast mountain range.  It is a gateway, with one foot in the mountain experience, and the other in the world of ships and sea.

Vancouver Island, that blue line on the distant horizon, is larger than some countries and states!  Victoria, the capital city of B.C. anchors the southern tip of Vancouver Island.  Towns en route to the wilderness preserve at the northern tip include: Duncan, Nanaimo, Parksville/Qualicum, Courtenay/Comox, Campbell River.  Each offers something unique to savour.

The jewels of the Salish Sea are the Gulf Islands, preserved in their environmental beauty by the provincial government, for the benefit of all B.C. residents.
The best known of the Gulf Islands is Salt Spring Island, with a strong artistic community — it’s sometimes referred to as Whistler By The Sea!

The plus?  With ferries, floatplane, helicopter services, these Island communities, alluringly visible from the Sea to Sky highway, are just mere minutes away from the Whistler experience.

Easy to expand your holiday stay, then, and to truly understand the unique blending of “sea” and “sky” that is offered by enjoying Whistler’s drama.
